Orava Castle

← Attractions

Orava Castle is one of the most significant monuments of castle architecture in Slovakia and a landmark of the entire Orava region. Perched on a steep 112-metre limestone cliff above the Orava River like an eagle's nest, it offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

History

The castle was built after the Tartar invasion of 1241 on the site of an older wooden hillfort. Over the centuries, this small fortress grew into an extensive complex with 154 rooms, connected by 754 stairs. Its history weaves together Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architectural elements. The Thurzo family carried out the most extensive rebuilding from 1556, and the castle reached its final form in 1611. After a devastating fire in 1800, it fell into disrepair, until it was comprehensively restored after the Second World War.

What to See

The tour leads through the Lower, Middle, and Upper Castles with palaces, fortifications, and towers. Highlights include three castle gates connected by a tunnel with underground passages and a dungeon. The main exhibitions include:

  • Archaeological exhibition in the Citadel, the oldest part of the Upper Castle
  • Natural history exhibition with samples of local fauna and flora
  • Ethnographic exhibition showcasing traditional folk life
  • Historical exhibition of period furnishings in medieval and Renaissance interiors
  • Chapel of St. Michael with the precious Renaissance tomb of the Thurzo family
  • The Armoury, Picture Gallery, and Treasury

For Families with Children

The castle is a perfect adventure destination for families. Kids can explore secret passages, admire historical weapons, and learn about life in the Middle Ages. The interactive elements and fairy-tale atmosphere captivate visitors of all ages.

Night Tours & Special Events

During the summer season, night tours with theatre and musical performances create a wonderfully eerie atmosphere. The castle is also a popular wedding venue.

Film Fame

Film fans will appreciate that the legendary German horror film Nosferatu (1922) and the modern adaptation Dracula (2020) were shot here. Orava Castle also inspired the fortress of Kaer Morhen in The Witcher series.
